Hayakawa was a pioneer of Japanese graphic design, who co-founded the Japan Advertising Artists Club with Kamekura in 1951 and was the first Japanese member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale. He opened his own studio in 1954, inventing a strange visual mixture of Japanese tradition with his own personal approach to depicting women. There was a large retrospective of his work at the Osaka Museum in 2011.
